LAKEMOOR – A Lakemoor attorney is suspended for two years after she misused funds intended for security retainers and filing fees, and neglected eight different client matters, the Illinois Supreme Court announced this week.
Magdalene R. Wilson, who was licensed in 2013 and practices at 1215 Bay Road, Lakemoor, neglected eight clients’ matters between 2014 and 2015. In five of those matters, Wilson deposited funds paid specifically for security retainers and filing fees into her personal account, and then used the funds for personal or business purposes, according to court records. Additionally, several clients tried to contact Wilson, 32, on numerous occasions during that time period and were unable to reach her.
Wilson represents several juvenile and criminal defendants in legal matters. Her suspension, recommended by the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, is effective April 10 for two years and until further order of the court. Wilson’s suspension could be stayed after 90 days if she pays $12,119 in restitution to previous clients before the 90 days are up. She also will be required to complete two years of probation.
A medical expert involved in the case said that Wilson’s misconduct occurred when she was suffering from opioid use disorder, which she now is in treatment for, according to court records.
Wilson also was ordered by the court as part of the terms of her probation to not consume any alcohol or unprescribed controlled substances, attend at least two Alcoholics Anonymous and/or Illinois Lawyers Assistance Program meetings a week, continue any and all treatment recommendations by her doctors and treatment providers, and submit to random drug tests, among other requirements.
The Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission is an Illinois Supreme Court agency that investigates alleged conduct by Illinois attorneys, holds hearings on specific charges and recommends discipline when warranted. The commission is composed of seven members, three of which are not lawyers.
Calls made to Wilson’s attorney were not returned Tuesday.
