An altered vision
Nikki’s ultrasound at 20 weeks’ gestation showed Ellie had spina bifida. Nikki said her attitude at the news was, “OK, well, we’re going to deal with it and make life the best we can possible make it for her.”
Still, it wasn’t a diagnosis Nikki expected to hear.
“Of course, it caught us off guard,” Nikki said. “I had daydreamed about a little girl – and little patent red Mary Janes and Barbie dolls and wedding dresses: all the girl dreams. Of course, there’s an element of ‘What’s going to happen?’ But for me, no sooner than I had that reaction, I thought, ‘Well, all those things are still going to happen.’”
An ambassador is born
Ellie is a personable child, which made her a good ambassador, even at a young age, Nikki said.
“It’s hard sometimes for little kids who are shy to be around strangers,” Nikki said. “When she was tiny, she didn’t have to do much, just meet people. As she got older, she maybe would speak a tiny bit.”
