LAKE IN THE HILLS – Village officials are in talks with a California company that is looking to lease land at the Lake in the Hills Airport to build a solar farm.

Lake in the Hills Economic Development Coordinator George Hahne told a gathering of business leaders about the proposal Tuesday during the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Chamber of Commerce’s annual Chamber membership lunch at Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano, 1524 S. Randall Road, Algonquin.

Carlsbad, California-based Cenergy Power, a division of BAP Power Corp., is looking to lease vacant land at the village’s airport to build a 12- to 30-acre solar farm that could provide energy to local consumers through ComEd’s grid, Hahne said.

Hahne said discussions with the company began in September.

Cenergy Power has completed hundreds of projects around the country. The company is a national solar developer and installer for medium- to large-scale, behind-the-meter and grid-scale projects, according to its website.

It focuses on the agriculture, commercial/industrial and utility-scale markets. It has completed projects with hospitals, manufacturing companies, schools, food processors, grocers, golf courses and casinos, according to its website.

Plans for a solar field at the airport still are preliminary. After going through the public planning process, the Village Board would have the final decision.

Hahne called the proposal a “win, win, win.” He said it would benefit the village and consumers by creating a renewable energy source on unused land.

Officials from Cenergy Power could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Hahne said the proposal could go before the board this month.
