DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove police are investigating a Jan. 6 incident in which a 14-year-old boy reportedly was offered a ride by a stranger near Downers Grove South High School, according to a news release.

The incident occurred at 4 p.m. when the boy was walking in the parking lot of the high school at 1436 Norfolk St., the release stated.

A man driving a blue or green vehicle, possibly a pickup truck, drove through the lot and asked the boy if he needed a ride, according to the release. The boy declined and continued to walk through Ruth Powers Park, which is immediately south of the school.

The boy saw the vehicle again near Springside Avenue and Bolson Drive, about one block south of the park. The vehicle drove away without any further discussion, police said.

The driver is described as a white man, about 30 years old, with short brown hair, the release stated.

Patrols have been increased at all Downers Grove parks and schools, and police are reminding parents to review stranger danger practices with their children, according to the release. Children should be instructed to run to a familiar house or school if approached by a stranger. The police should be called as soon as possible.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Downers Grove Police Department at 630-434-5600.
