JOLIET – A Joliet man was arrested after he tried to sexually assault a family member in Bolingbrook in 2016, police said.

Abraham Martinez-Mendez, 31, of the 800 block North Broadway was arrested March 22 on charges of attempted criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual abuse and unlawful restraint. Martinez-Mendez was booked into the Will County jail. His bond was set at $150,000 bond.

Bolingbrook police received a report of an attempted criminal sexual assault Oct. 21, 2016, Bolingbrook police Lt. Anthony Columbus said in an email. A woman claimed that Martinez-Mendez, a family member, attempted to sexually abuse her several days earlier while he was visiting a residence in the 300 block of DuPage Drive, police said.

Martinez-Mendez allegedly grabbed the woman and tried to restrain her while engaging in sexual conduct. She was able to get away from him, Columbus said.

After a review of the case, Bolingbrook police issued an arrest warrant for Martinez-Mendez on March 21. When asked about the length of time between the report and arrest, Columbus said he couldn’t go into details about it. Martinez-Mendez’s case is scheduled for a bond status hearing Thursday and a preliminary hearing April 5.

In 2017, Martinez-Mendez pleaded guilty to one count of domestic battery while another count was dropped. He was sentenced to two days in jail, credited for one day already served, given two years of conditional discharge and fined $502.
