Taste of Glen Ellyn to start summer on high note

Event will run May 17 through 20 in downtown Glen Ellyn

GLEN ELLYN – Starting May 17, the Taste of Glen Ellyn will usher in the summer festival season through food, music and fun.

This year marks the 41st anniversary of the Taste of Glen Ellyn, which will run May 17 through 20 in the Main Street parking lot between Duane Street and Hillside Avenue in downtown Glen Ellyn.

Last year, a community stage was added to the festival, in addition to the main entertainment stage. More local groups will be part of this year's community stage on May 19 and 20.

"What I'm trying to tell Glen Ellyn people is that the Taste has a lot of family fun things to do with their kids," said Dawn Smith, executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the Taste of Glen Ellyn.

For example, Luis Arturo Dance Academy in Glen Ellyn will put on performances on the community stage from 4 to 4:30 p.m. May 19 and May 20. In addition, the Glen Ellyn Park District Grasshoppers Tumbling Team will perform from 1:30 to 2 p.m. May 20, along with the Glen Ellyn Park District Academy from 2 to 2:30 p.m. May 20.

Students from DeForest Dance Academy also will perform as part of the community stage, along with the Sunshine Dance Project and other groups.

The Taste of Glen Ellyn will feature food from local restaurants and four days of live entertainment – including Hi Infidelity, 7th Heaven and students from the School of Rock in Glen Ellyn – as well as a carnival, craft show and business expo.

The carnival, sponsored by the Glen Ellyn Fair Committee, will run through May 20 in the Crescent Boulevard parking lot west of Main Street in downtown Glen Ellyn. Discounted tickets are available at the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce office at 810 N. Main St., Glen Ellyn Public Library at 400 Duane St., Glen Ellyn Historical Society at 800 N. Main St. and Glen Ellyn Civic Center at 535 Duane St.

Those who attend the festival May 19 might see more people running than usual. The Y Run 5K, Super Kids 1K and Fun Run will take place that day in downtown Glen Ellyn.

The 5K race starts at 8 a.m., and the Super Kids Fun Run is at 9:15 a.m. Those who want to participate can register at

Attendees also will have the chance to paint 12 flower pots that will later grace the downtown. The community painting project will take place from noon to 5 p.m. May 19 and 20 in a tent sponsored by Bottle & Bottega in front of the former Giesche Shoes store at 400 N. Main St.

The flower pots will be dispersed throughout the downtown, and $100 will be given to the art teacher of the school with the most Facebook likes for classroom art supplies. Both Glen Ellyn School District 41 and Community Consolidated School District 89 will be participating in the project, along with St. Petronille and St. James the Apostle Catholic schools.

"The brim of the flower pot is going to have the school's name, and then we're asking all of the kids to come in and paint their designated flower pot," Smith said. "Once they are scattered around town, we're going to have Facebook contests."

During the community project, participants also can find out about #GlenEllynRocks, a handmade rock treasure hunt promoting community and kindness. Participants paint a rock and hide for another to find.

"They might put a nice message like, 'You're awesome' or 'You Rock,' and then on the back they put '#GlenEllynRocks,' " Smith said. "There's a Facebook page dedicated to this called 'Glen Ellyn Rocks!.' Many other towns do this, so I'm excited to do this in Glen Ellyn."
