Elmhurst police conduct safety checks surrounding July 4 holiday

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Police Department is conducting extra enforcement of laws related to driving under the influence, seat belts and distracted driving with a campaign from June 28 to July 8.

The department continues to take part in a year-long grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation that aims to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes related to violations of these laws and allows extra officers to be on patrol to conduct this enforcement, according to an announcement on the city of Elmhurst website.

The majority of the extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, which are statistically the most dangerous time to be on the roadway, the announcement stated.

Motorists are encouraged to drive safely, buckle up and make alternate travel arrangements if they plan to be drinking or to designate a driver who will not be drinking, according to the announcement. Anyone seeing a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver is encouraged to call 911.
