Elmhurst police vehicle strikes 2 teen bicyclists in downtown Elmhurst

ELMHURST – An Elmhurst Police Department patrol vehicle struck two juvenile bicyclists at about 7:10 a.m. July 2 at First Street and West Avenue.

The vehicle was making a right turn from westbound First Street to northbound West Avenue and struck two 14-year-old girls who were riding their bicycles southbound on West Avenue on the east sidewalk crossing First Street, according to a Police Department Facebook page post that was issued about 1 p.m. July 2.

An ambulance was called to the scene to evaluate both teens, who were released to their parents at the scene, the post stated.

At the time of the collision, the officer was on routine patrol duties, and it has been confirmed he was not communicating on his Mobile Data Terminal or a cellphone, according to the post.

“We are thankful that the girls were not seriously injured and an internal investigation is currently underway," Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth said in the post.
