DOWNERS GROVE – A Downers Grove man charged with attacking his 80-year-old mother with a hatchet entered a blind plea of guilty July 10 to aggravated domestic battery in DuPage County Court, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release.

John Flick, 58, of the 4200 block of Earlston Road, entered his plea in front of Judge Liam Brennan. Bond was set on May 19, 2017, at $500,000. Flick has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time, the release stated.

On May 14, 2017, the victim’s daughter visited her mother for Mother’s Day and noticed lacerations on her mother’s face and head, according to the release.

The two women went to the hospital to seek treatment for the victim’s injuries. Hospital authorities reported the injuries to the Downers Grove Police Department. A subsequent investigation conducted by the police led to Flick as the person responsible for the injuries to his mother, the release stated.

The investigation revealed that on May 13, 2017, Flick returned to the home he shared with his mother, and at some point, he repeatedly hit his mother about the head and face with a hatchet, according to the release.

Flick is scheduled to appearance in court Aug. 21 for the return of a pre-sentence report. Because the victim is a senior, Flick is extended term eligible and faces between three and 14 years in prison, the release stated.
