GLEN ELLYN – Shoppers in Glen Ellyn and Wheaton likely will find plenty of bargains during a sidewalk sale that will put the spotlight on businesses in the two communities.
The four-day event will kick off July 26 and run through July 29. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 26, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 28 and noon to 4 p.m. July 29. The sidewalk sale is being organized by the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce and the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn in collaboration with the Downtown Wheaton Association.
On July 28, the sale coincides with The Tour of Lake Ellyn. This event began in the 1970s, and the 1.4-mile course will take cyclists around Lake Ellyn. Two-time cycling Olympian John Vande Velde, who grew up in Glen Ellyn, designed the course. The first edition of the race was in 1970, and the course was raced under the name the Tour of Lake Ellyn during the 1970s and 1980s.
A trolley will run between Glen Ellyn and Wheaton from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 28, making stops at the Glen Ellyn Sidewalk Sale at Main Street and Crescent Boulevard, the Tour of Lake Ellyn, the Wheaton Sidewalk Sale at Wesley and Hale streets and the Wheaton French Market at Front and Main streets.
“Everyone can hit all four venues,” said Carol White, executive director of the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn.
This is the first time the organizations have teamed up to present an event. White said she is excited about the opportunity.
“I truly believe we’re only as strong as our closest neighbors,” White said.
