Suzy Glowiak ekes out victory over state Sen. Chris Nybo in 24th District race

Western Springs Democrat Suzanne "Suzy" Glowiak has won the race against state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, for the 24th Illinois Senate District.

The victory came down to a difference of 286 votes.

Glowiak received about 50.1 percent of the vote in both DuPage and Cook counties, amounting to 47,196 votes in DuPage and 1,750 in Cook, compared to Nybo's 46,969 votes in DuPage and 1,691 votes in Cook, according to preliminary election results.

Glowiak and Nybo previously faced off for the 24th District seat in 2014. In that election, Nybo won 60.3 percent of the 78,947 votes cast.

Neither candidate could be reached on election night.

Glowiak, an engineering consultant for CED Technologies, served as a Western Springs trustee from 2009 to 2017.

In a Suburban Life candidate questionnaire, she touted her record of "promoting compromise and collaboration" and said Illinois should support more public-private partnerships, especially with post-secondary education, and pass a comprehensive, long-term, statewide capital bill.

In his questionnaire, Nybo pointed to his "reputation as one of few members willing to risk pushing for meaningful pension reform" with his support of reform proposals. Nybo also has supported bills allowing guns to be removed from the homes of dangerous individuals, banning bump stocks, restricting those younger than 21 from purchasing firearms, and creating longer waiting periods before firearms can be purchased.

The district includes all or parts of Darien, Elmhurst, Oakbrook Terrace, Wheaton, Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Villa Park, Western Springs, Westmont and Willowbrook.
