WHY SHE WAS SELECTED:
IC Catholic Prep freshman Claire Wagner scored 18 points and had eight rebounds against St. Francis, and is averaging 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game. In Wagner's first high school game she had 21 points and nine rebounds against Lisle.
Wagner talked to Suburban Life sports editor Joshua Welge about her season. Here is an edited version of the transcript:
Welge: How do you feel about the start to the season?
Wagner: I really like basketball, it's my favorite sport. The girls are good with me. They've helped me. We are very close. I feel we're going to have a great year.
Welge: How much confidence did that first game give you?
Wagner: It gave me a lot of confidence. My teammates were looking for me, they trusted me with the ball. They were talking to me, helping calm me down. They are great teammates and a great great group of girls.
Welge: Did you know the girls before this year?
Wagner: My sister is on the team, so I knew some of them pretty well.
Welge: Had you played on the same team with your sister before?
Wagner: No. I've been playing basketball most of my life, and I played travel for a year. My sister never played before. She's doing it as a fun activity. I know she's trying her best. She's a good teammate.
Welge: What's the biggest challenge of going from playing eighth-graders to high school?
Wagner: I don't really think about it too much. I play my game, focus on my game rather than who I am playing against.
