DOWNERS GROVE – Five candidates will vie for three seats on the Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education in the April election.
There also will be a two-way race for a two-year term on the board featuring incumbent Doug Purcell, a board member since 2011, and challenger Tracy Weiner, who is active in the district and a frequent critic of the board. Purcell currently is the president of the board.
The candidates seeking four-year terms include Kirat Doshi, who was appointed to the board in July, incumbent Elizabeth Sigale and newcomers Kylie Spahn, Emily Hanus and Steven Olczyk.
Spahn, Hanus and Olczyk frequently attend school board meetings and have served on district committees.
A lottery to determine the top four spots on the ballot will be Dec. 20.
Incumbent John Miller decided against seeking re-election. He served on the board since 2009.
In Community High School District 99, five candidates will contend for three seats on the board.
Newcomers Joanna Vasquez Drexler, a Downers Grove resident, and Donald Erickson of Woodridge join incumbents Michael Davenport, Donald Renner and Nancy Kupka on the April 2, 2019, ballot.
Kupka of Woodridge was elected to the board in 2011 and is the current board president. Davenport also was elected in 2011. Renner joined the board in 2015. Davenport and Renner are Downers Grove residents.
