“This weekend was definitely not exactly what I expected, but I’m beyond thrilled with the outcome,” Carlson said. “It’s honestly something I never expected would happen [on bars].
Freshman year I made bars finals, kind of squeaked out the last spot. To come out and do one of my best routines and be third place among some of the best competitors in the state was just super rewarding. I couldn’t have pictured a better way to end today.”
Other state qualifiers were Downers South senior Andrea Davenport and freshman Kristina Carlson, Abby’s sister, Downers Grove North senior Brooke Stocki and sophomore Gabriella Stellato and Hinsdale Central junior Caroline Klobach.
These were the third state trips for Abby Carlson, Davenport and Stocki. As a sophomore, Carlson missed the state postseason when she tore her ACL on floor at the conference meet. Last year, Carlson returned to state and finished second on floor (9.675). Saturday’s medal was the product of upgrades this season, including a double layout dismount.
“She’s the hardest working kid. Every day is 100 percent in the gym. That’s why she’s at the level she’s at,” Downers South coach Kristyn Campos said. “She was just here to have fun today. She wanted to end it on her terms and she did. Awesome way to go out.”
