Pubs, putters part of annual Berwyn event

BERWYN – Berwyn’s Depot District will host the 16th annual Mini-Golf Pub Crawl on April 27.

From noon to 6 p.m., friends can grab their putters and visit various Depot District bars and restaurants, all while playing a handmade mini-golf green located outside select locations.

Amanda Villarreal, Berwyn project manager for the Berwyn Development Corp., said the area’s bars and restaurants put maximum effort into their handmade greens.

“Businesses take the creation of their putting greens very seriously,” Villarreal said. “The participating venues go above and beyond to come up with the most impressive, one-of-a-kind putting greens in order to win the highly prized Twisted Putter trophy. In the past, we have seen putting greens consisting of paintings, train sets, soccer balls and even a toilet. It’s very impressive seeing how much work and creativity they put into their designs.”

Among the participating locations are Godson’s, Connie’s Family Restaurant, Flapjack Brewery and The Garage Smokehouse and Bar. Teams are encouraged to create fun and comical team names to add to the festivities, something Villarreal has enjoyed in previous years.

“Golfers get extremely creative and humorous with their team names,” Villarreal said. “There are so many to choose from. In the past, we have seen names like Putt Your Back Into It, Putter Me Timbers and Fore Your Information.”

The Mini-Golf Pub Crawl’s fun and friendly atmosphere has made it a popular, growing event. This year, Villarreal hopes for even more growth.

“Residents and visitors alike have always enjoyed participating in the pub crawl, and it continues to grow year after year,” she said. “Last year, we brought in record numbers with over 600 participants. We hope this year is even bigger and better.”

Prizes will be awarded to the lowest and highest score of the day and the best decorated putter. There’s also the Twisted Putter Trophy for the best designed hole. There will be a raffle for a 55-inch smart television during the 19th-hole after-party at Perception Lounge. A free party bus will be available to transfer golfers between bars.

Interested players can register online at http://bit.ly/Mini-GolfCrawl18 for $15 a person or $50 a foursome. Sign-in will be from 11 a.m. to noon at Connie’s Family Restaurant.

Participating locations are 1890 Café, Berwyn Park District, Connie’s Family Restaurant, Flapjack Brewery, the Garage Smokehouse and Bar, Godson’s, House of Slots, The James Joyce Irish Pub, Lavergne’s Tavern, Off the Traxx, Olive or Twist Martini Bar, The Outta Space, Perception Lounge and Quan’s Oasis.
