Bolingbrook Pride Community Picnic event set for June 9

Organizers of the Bolingbrook Pride Picnic are seeking input from the community for its 2nd annual event scheduled for this summer.

The Bolingbrook LGBTQ Pride Picnic event will be held this year on June 9.

This is the second year in a row that such an event will be held in the village and organizers are planning on an expanded picnic with between 500 and 1,000 attendees expected this year.

There will be a variety of resources offered at the picnic, including a financial adviser giving two free sessions, hair demonstrations and a “hug tent” where volunteers will offer free hugs “to help heal the wound of rejection and conflict too often present in the lives of the LGBTQ community,” according to a news release.

Young people also will have plenty of activities to enjoy at the Fountaindale Library, including story time for kids, free face painting, a free photo booth, vendors and artisans selling goods, and a trans clothing swap where participants can trade items. A yoga instructor will also be giving a free lesson at 12:30 p.m.

The food vendors at this year’s event will include Sausagefest food truck, Smokin’ Z BBQ food truck, Kona Ice and Epic Popcorn, which is the first and only National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce certified popcorn company in the country.

There also will be a tent for the Romeoville-based dog rescue organization Mama Zoey and Puppies, which charges $2 for a puppy cuddle. Last year, the organization’s offer was a hit and it raised a lot of money, according to Bolingbrook Pride.

The pride picnic will be from noon until 6 p.m. in the space behind the Bolingbrook Village Hall, 375 W. Briarcliff Road.

Bolingbrook Pride also is looking for volunteers to work the family-friendly LGBTQ event.
