Lipinski co-sponsors bill to combat robocalls

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, announced he was throwing his support behind a bipartisan bill to combat unwanted robocalls.

Lipinski is co-sponsoring the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, H.R. 3375, to bring relief from “abusive robocall practices.” Last year, an estimated 47.8 billion robocalls were placed nationwide, an increase of 17 billion calls over the previous year, according to a news release.

“Residents of the Third District are sick and tired of spam robocalls,” Lipinski said. “It’s time we end the robocall epidemic, and that’s why I’m proud to co-sponsor the bipartisan Stopping Robocalls Act.”

The bill would require phone carriers to implement call authentication technology so consumers can trust their caller ID again, with no additional line-item for consumers. It includes a process to help rural carriers implement this technology. It also directs the Federal Communications Commission to issue rules to protect consumers from calls they didn’t agree to receive and to ensure consumers can withdraw consent.

The legislation ensures the FCC has the authority and tools to take quick action when it tracks down robocalls, including by extending the statute of limitations from one year to three, and in some instances four, for callers violating prohibitions. The FCC also would be mandated to submit a report to Congress on the implementation of its reassigned numbers database.

“I’m hopeful we’ll be able to pass this comprehensive bill ... in the coming months,” Lipinski said.
