Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, joined Illinois Tollway officials and members of the O’Laughlin family on July 13 to celebrate the Interstate 294 Plainfield Road bridge memorial dedication in honor of Kelli Joy O’Laughlin.
“Kelli’s tragic death has impacted so many families throughout this region,” Durkin said. “Kelli’s life and spirit are forever ingrained in the minds and hearts of her family, friends and countless residents of our state. This dedication reaffirms that Kelli’s life had great meaning and that her memory will last eternally.”
O’Laughlin was a 14-year-old freshman at Lyons Township High School when she was murdered during a home invasion in 2011. Her death ravaged the communities surrounding her Indian Head Park home for years, and her life has been memorialized through fundraising events and scholarships.
“By dedicating this bridge in her honor, we will forever keep Kelli and her family in our thoughts,” state Sen. John Curran, R-Downers Grove, said. “I also hope this memorial provides peace and comfort to those who knew and loved Kelli most.”
Durkin introduced House Joint Resolution 78 to dedicate the Plainfield Road Bridge over Interstate 294 as the “Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Bridge” to honor O’Laughlin’s life, legacy and long-lasting impact on the community.
