Lake Ellyn Cardboard Boat Regatta to be held July 1st!

Put your engineering skills and creativity to the test!  Gather family and friends, and build a boat for the Lake Ellyn Cardboard Boat Regatta this summer.   You and your crew can race in the 24th annual regatta on July 1st, 2017, when participants will compete for the fastest race times, along with awards for Team Spirit, Most Creative, and Best Sinking!

“This is such a fun event each summer,” said Courtney O’Kray, Marketing & Communications Supervisor for the Glen Ellyn Park District.  “We have a lot of groups who love the challenge of building a boat, whether they’re trying to be the fastest or the most artistic. But many people come out just to watch this popular, family-friendly tradition.”

Races are divided into three categories:  ages 9-17, ages 18+, and families ages 9+.  Teams can have up to eight members.  “Each entry receives twenty sheets of corrugated cardboard to start their boats,” added O’Kray.  “A new feature this year is that the Park District will provide the paddles.  Kayak paddles aren’t allowed in this event.”

Although the race course is fairly short, about 200 feet long, you have to paddle fast, because boats can only be made of corrugated cardboard and various materials to hold the boat together.  Teams can decorate their boat however they wish, but check the rules and regulations on the website to make sure you only use accepted materials.

“The Glen Ellyn Fourth of July Committee also provides concessions for purchase,” explained O’Kray.  “They’ll have over a dozen food trucks offering food and refreshments, starting at 11:00 am.”  The event opens at 10:00 am to the public. Races begin at noon.

The Regatta takes place at Lake Ellyn Park, 645 Pershing Avenue in Glen Ellyn.  Entrants must pre-register by Friday, June 30, 2017 at noon.  The cost is $50 per boat.  For more information, please contact:
