‘Always Remember’ Commemorates 100th Year

For the 100th year, thousands of patriotic citizens will line the downtown Elmhurst’s streets up to the Veterans Memorial in Wilder Park on May 28 for Elmhurst’s Memorial Day Parade as a way to “Always Remember” our nation’s military men and women.

Presented by our Chamber—in partnership with Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187, Veterans of Foreign Wars Villa Park Post 2801, City of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Park District—the Parade kicks off at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Post-Parade Ceremony at 11 a.m.

Our Parade is actually one year older than Post 187, which will celebrate its Centennial in 2019, and shares this 100th Anniversary with both our Chamber and York Community High School, whose Marching Dukes band will help lead this year’s special edition.

A pair of Beechcraft T-34s flown by members of the Lima Lima Flight Team will perform a variety of aerial maneuvers once our Parade steps off.

This year’s Grand Marshal is Elmhurst resident Mark Mallon, a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve specializing in Psychological Operations and Bronze Star Medal recipient who served two tours in Iraq (2003-04 and 2005-06) and one tour in Afghanistan (2012-13).

On display in Wilder Park over the Memorial Day weekend will be a waving sea of more than 1,600 U.S. flags honoring Vietnam War service members who were prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA), courtesy of True Patriots Care, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit foundation dedicated to the recognition and support of first responders and armed services members who have served their communities.

Adjacent to the Veterans Memorial will be the traditional display of four rows of white wooden crosses featuring nameplates of deceased Elmhurst veterans, including many KIAs.

So enjoy your Memorial Day weekend, but also remember why America is the land of the free and the home of brave.
