Local Catholic School Participates in SCARCE Environmental Program

The School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) program is an award-winning not-for-profit group that provides environmental education to help citizens work towards building sustainable communities.

“The SCARCE program is so valuable for our school,” explained Tanya Anderson, a middle school science teacher at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School in Lisle. “As our students become more environmentally aware, they will become better global citizens who care about and work to protect the world around them.”

In 2016, SJA earned the Water Quality Flag through a SCARCE program funded by the DuPage County Stormwater Committee. “Our Water Quality Flag is flown on our school flag pole just under the American Flag,” said Anderson. “To earn it, the entire school learned about water conservation through different activities, books, and videos. This year we earned the Earth Flag, sponsored by the DuPage County Environmental Committee, which we’ll receive May 23rd.”

To earn the Earth Flag, students at SJA had to complete a variety of activities. “We set up vermicomposting (with worms) of fruit and vegetable scraps in our lunchroom, where we also set up recycling bins for milk cartons and other recyclable materials,” added Anderson. “We encouraged students to carry reusable lunch boxes, and we set up recycling bins in all classrooms and school hallways. SCARCE presented our faculty with special training, and gave educational presentations to the entire school. Younger students learned how tires can be recycled into roadway materials, and older students focused on learning about the effects and devastation on wildlife from the Exxon Valdez and BP oil spills.”

The SCARCE program opens students’ eyes to the world around them. “They enjoy it when we bring real world science into the classrooms,” added Anderson. “We hope to expose them to different fields of study as they move on to high school and college. The SCARCE program has been phenomenal.”
