Morton College Celebrates, Honors Veterans

SPONSORED

Veterans Day is a national holiday that recognizes all men and women who have served in the U.S. military during war and during times of peace.  At Morton College, special celebrations and programs, along with a veterans-only scholarship, honor and recognize student veterans working to continue their education.

"The Morton College Foundation offers a $1,500 scholarship to our student veterans," explained Blanca Martinez, Veterans Coordinator at Morton College.  "This scholarship is a direct payment of $750 per semester, via check.  It's in addition to any other federal benefits that they are eligible to receive."  To be eligible for the Veterans Scholarship, students must be a resident of the Morton College District, be enrolled full-time, maintain a 2.5 minimum GPA, and have served a minimum of two years of active service in the U.S. military with an honorable discharge.

Morton College also offers a federal work-study program where veterans can apply to any departments on campus that are hiring.  "We list all current openings at our financial office and on our Morton College website," said Martinez.  "I also send emails to our student veterans regarding any job opening at MC or near the community.  We are hoping to offer an additional work-study program through the Department of Veterans Affairs in the near future."

To show gratitude to student, staff, and faculty veterans, Morton College hosts a weeklong series of events during Veterans Week.  Past events have included a flag-raising ceremony conducted by a service member and the creation of a "Wall of Gratitude" for students and staff to post thank you cards and photos of loved ones who served in the military.  "Annual dinners are held to recognize our current student veterans and their families," added Martinez.  "We include a White Table display to honor Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action, from all wars."  For more information, please contact:
