BOLINGBROOK – The noted West Towns Chorus, a four-part harmony a cappella group, will present its annual Christmas concert Dec. 14 in Bolingbrook.
This year’s program is titled “Countdown to Christmas” and includes guest artists. The scriptwriter for the first half of the show, Dave Shepherd of Bolingbrook, said the title refers to a man counting down the days until his wife and grandchild arrive home again in time for the holidays, a news release stated. The theme of family togetherness extends to audience members who have made the show a shared tradition for years.
West Towns Chorus, which is in its 71st year, has been presenting a pull-out-all-the-stops Christmas show for 28 of those years, according to organizers.
The 40-plus strong group, directed by Carrie Marcotte of Bolingbrook, presents a mix of favorite secular standards, such as “Merry Christmas, Darling” and “Little Saint Nick” in its first half, with religious Christmas songs ranging from “Do You Hear What I Hear” to “Adeste Fideles” and other carols in the second half. Narration between songs for that part of the show is centered on the story of Jesus’ birth, according to Kathy Westburg of Hanover Park, who chairs the show and wrote the second half of the program.
About 40 women of the Midwest Crossroad Chorus, directed by Tori Hicks of Joliet, will make a guest appearance in both portions. The group will perform its own set of a cappella music, as well as sing some combined numbers with the men of West Towns. Costume changes between the first and second halves add to the show’s visual appeal.
Other guest performers include the Affinity Strings under Anny Moravec of Downers Grove; the Chicago Bronze English Handbell Ensemble, directed by Andrea Handley of Evanston; keyboardist David Rhodes of Woodridge; and a few quartets from within WTC.
Audience members are invited to participate in a gift basket raffle, with contents and themes from chocolate to holiday-related items. Winners will be announced at the end of each show. West Towns Chorus is a nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to change lives through song.
All seating is general admission.
